1. Two new brochures produced by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) will be available from the ANSC beginning in the
second week of May 2007. Each brochure is designed to target specific areas
as noted. Flotillas are encouraged to order these brochures and include
them in their public outreach activities. Your assistance in providing this
valuable information to the public is greatly appreciated.
A. Protect Dolphins - Admire Them from a Distance
1. This brochure is intended to cover the entire east coast
(7, 5S, 5N, 1S, 1N) (yes there are Dolphins in the Gulf and on the West
Coast, but NOAA desires this brochure only be distributed along the East
Coast).
2. This brochure describes the harmful effects of feeding
dolphins in the wild and why feeding is illegal. The brochure explains that
feeding wild dolphins has been shown to: alter the animals' natural
behavior; jeopardize their health through ingestion of contaminated or
inappropriate food and non-food items; and reduce their wariness of people
and boats which increases their vulnerability to injury or death from
entanglement in fishing gear or boat strikes. The brochure also mentions
that feeding dolphins in the wild poses a significant safety risk to humans,
as there are documented cases of people being bitten, hospitalized, and
killed by wild marine mammals when attempting to feed and closely interact
with them.
B. NMFS Southeast Region Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Viewing
Guidelines
1. This brochure is intended for distribution from Texas to
North Carolina (8CR, 7, 5S).
2. This brochure informs the public about protection of marine
wildlife. It explains NOAA Fisheries' Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Viewing
"Code of Conduct." The Code of Conduct includes recommendations, such as
limiting your viewing time, traveling in a predictable manner, and moving
away cautiously from animals that show signs of disturbance. This brochure
also provides an overview of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and Endangered
Species Act.
2. The purpose of this list is to keep Auxiliarists as well as all other
interested parties abreast of current developments, policies, manuals, etc.
All information contained herein and linked is OFFICIAL policy and
information.
3. Internet Release and Distribution is Authorized.
