SUBJ: HELP WANTED: BE A PART OF INCREASING DIVERSITY IN THE COAST 
GUARD 

1. THIS ALCOAST SOLICITS MEMBERS FOR THE COMPASS DIVERSITY OUTREACH 
TEAM.  THE COMPASS DIVERSITY OUTREACH TEAM IS A GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS 
WHOSE MISSION IS TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF THE COAST GUARD IN 
COMMUNITIES NATIONWIDE, THUS INCREASING THE DIVERSE REPRESENTATION 
OF OUR SERVICE.  COMPASS DEPLOYS COAST GUARD VOLUNTEERS (ACTIVE 
DUTY, CIVILIAN, AUXILIARY, RESERVE) WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN THEIR 
LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND POSSIBLY AT NATIONAL EVENTS.  COMPASS RELIES 
ON HIGHLY ENERGETIC LEADERS OF OUR SERVICE TO REPRESENT THE COAST 
GUARD AT SELECT EVENTS.  FOR EXAMPLE: 

 A. CHILDREN COMMUNITY SPORTING EVENTS 
 B. CIVIC GROUPS AND CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS 
 C. AFFINITY GROUPS AND PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS 
 D. FAMILY AND RELATIVES 
 E. PLACES OF CONTINUING EDUCATION 
 F. PLACES OF WORSHIP 
 G. CHILDREN SCHOOLS 
 H. ADULT AND COMMUNITY SPORTS LEAGUES 

TEAM MEMBERS ACCOMPLISH THIS MISSION BY CONDUCTING A WIDE VARIETY 
OF OUTREACH ACTIVITIES, WHICH HAVE INCLUDED:SPEAKING AT HIGH SCHOOL 
AND COLLEGIATE CAREER FAIRS, REPRESENTING THE CG AT CULTURAL 
FESTIVALS, MENTORING GIRL SCOUTS AND BOY SCOUTS, AND REPRESENTING 
THE CG AT NATIONAL CONFERENCES AND AMERICAN INDIAN POW WOWS.  TEAM 
MEMBERS MAY INITIATE DIVERSITY OUTREACH ACTIVITIES, OR MAY BE 
CALLED UPON TO ASSIST RECRUITING OFFICES OR OTHER UNITS WITH THEIR 
OUTREACH ACTIVITIES.  EVERY COMPASS MEMBER IS EXPECTED TO BECOME 
FAMILIAR WITH THEIR LOCAL RECRUITING OFFICE.  PARTICIPATION IN 
ACTIVITIES IS DEPENDENT ON UNIT AVAILABILITY AND APPROVAL. 

2. COMPASS MEMBERS WILL LEVERAGE THEIR ABILITY TO SERVE AS 
VOLUNTEERS IN THE COMMUNITY WHILE STILL FULFILLING THEIR 
RESPONSIBILITIES IN THEIR RESPECTIVE UNITS.  BY LEVERAGING THE 
NETWORKS AND CONTACTS OUR COAST GUARD MEMBERS ALREADY HAVE IN THEIR 
OWN COMMUNITIES, WE CAN HAVE A TREMENDOUS IMPACT ON THE DIVERSITY 
OF OUR WORKFORCE.  TO REMAIN A MULTIFACETED SERVICE, WE MUST 
CONTINUE TO STRIVE TO BE THE "EMPLOYER OF CHOICE," ENSURING WE 
RECRUIT AND RETAIN THE MOST TALENTED PEOPLE IN AMERICA. 

3.  THE COMPASS DIVERSITY OUTREACH TEAM CURRENTLY HAS 112 MEMBERS. 
THE EFFORTS OF THESE MEMBERS HAVE RESULTED IN AN INCREASED 
AWARENESS OF THE COAST GUARD ESPECIALLY IN MINORITY COMMUNITIES. BY 
INCREASING THE SIZE OF OUR VOLUNTEER CORPS, WE WILL BE ABLE TO 
REACH A WIDER AUDIENCE AND SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE AWARENESS OF WHAT 
THE COAST GUARD DOES AND HOW TO BE A PART OF THIS GREAT SERVICE. 

4. UNIT COMMANDING OFFICERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO SUPPORT COMPASS WHICH 
IS PART AND PARCEL TO THE COMMANDANTS EMPHASIS ON DIVERSITY. 

5. APPROVED OUTREACH ACTIVITIES ARE FUNDED BY THE COMPASS DIVERSITY 
OUTREACH TEAM IN COMDT (CG-12B).  FUNDING COVERS CONFERENCE 
REGISTRATION FEES, TRAVEL COSTS, AND (IN THE CASE OF RESERVISTS) 
THE COST OF THE MEMBERS PAY.  IDT DRILLS ARE NOT TO BE USED TO 
SUPPORT THE COMPASS PROGRAM. 

6. TO BE A PRODUCTIVE COMPASS MEMBER, IT IS VITAL TO HAVE A FIRM 
COMMITMENT TO SERVING AS A VOLUNTEER AND HAVE SUPERVISORY SUPPORT. 
OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE A TEAM THAT IS DIVERSE. PEOPLE WITH PUBLIC 
SPEAKING OR FOREIGN LANGUAGE SKILLS ARE ESPECIALLY NEEDED. 

7. MEMBERS ARE EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN AT LEAST THREE OUTREACH 
ACTIVITIES PER YEAR, INCLUDING COMPLETION OF AFTER-ACTION REPORTS 
FOR EACH EVENT.
